I'm sure there will be lots of discussions about what the new rules do for (or more acuratly, to) the Tau, so I won't go into that much here.\
While looking through my local store's advance copy of the new rulebook though I noticed that there is actually alot of new fluff material for the Tau in it.
They mention several previously unknown battlesuit types including a n XV-8x suit designed for zero-G fighting, and one or two mid-size suits (I think an XV-3 but I'm not sure). We'll probably never see an official model for any of those but it should be excellent conversion fodder.
They also mention a new commander character. Unfortunatly I can't remember her(?) name, but it was someone I had never heard of before.
I think they mention a couple of specialized types of cadres beyond just "hunter" cadres
They also bring up the problem with Tau age (farsight and shadowsun being hundreds of years old but Aun'Shi being old at 40) They say the typical Tau lifespan is 40-50 years but that some individuals, who seem tied to the destiny of the race, seem to live much longer.
That doesn't really expalin anything but I think it's encouraging that they at least acknowledged the problem.
Anyway, that was some of the stuff I noticed on just a quick skimm through the book. There may be more stuff.
All in all I was pretty happy with the fluff portions of the book even if the rules are going to totally nerf us.
So if anyone is still checking the site, what do you think?

| The new battle suits sound sweet and so does the new character but the whole "destiny" thing is pretty lame. Just another way for GW to keep the old characters and not come up w/ any new ones
All Orks is equal, but some Orks are more equal dan uvvas.

| At least they recognized that they screwed up the fluff.
And they did add a new character in the fluff, I just can't remember his/her name right now.

| The new fluff sounds very interesting, I'm really glad that GW is paying more attention to it this time. Even though the rules in the 5th edition book could be bad for the Tau, they could easily put together a nice F.A.Q. (Erratum) in which they explain how it works for the Tau, it has happened before.
I hope that the timeline they have in the book is covering Tau aswell and that it contains not to many flaws. On the other hand, the latest information counts, so everything in the Big Red Book is true. The age of Farsight and Shadowsun is not the only problem there is with the Tau timeline, but when I have the new information I will finish the timeline I made some time ago.

One caste for the protection of our race, for their skills and strategies will defend us all.
One caste for the construction of a safe place, for without their technology our empire would fall.
One caste for our faraway travels, for their ships will bring us through the galaxy.
One caste for the talking at all levels, for their smooth words will pave our road to victory.
In our galaxy there will only be the Tau’va. One caste to rule them all, one caste to guid them, one caste to bring them all, and in the era of the Mont’au, bind them. In our galaxy there will only be the Tau’va. | | Back to top

| The book has a pretty extensive chronology but I think it is all imperial. The only Tau stuff that is going to be in the book's timeline is going to be battles with humans I am pretty sure.

| I'm still working my way through the rules so I'm not sure but I don't think Farsight is mentioned much, if at all.
Sorry

and there is a forum about some of the new rules on the news page.
p.s is the destiny thing have to do with the fact that the tau could have been made by the eldar?
The Gue\'vesa followers of Khorne killed my team, my father and burned me when i was a Shas\'la.
Now I am a Shas\'el. I strive to end the followers of Korne. The fire that burned me still burns in the deepest place in my heart. It forever shall burn. I am now known as the Burning knight.

hmm theory: Perhaps each caste has their own lifespan? perhaps Aun'Shi being 40-50 is old for an Aun (good way to avoid corruption in the government is to rotate leaders frequently perhaps this is the Aun's internal clock failsafe as leadership caste) and fire warriors, provided they are not killed in a combat zone, can live for a long time like a few hundred years like shadowsun and farsight. Who can really say if living in space can prolong or shorten life spans especially for an alien species whose caste system has altered their state (buff fire caste, skinny and tall air caste, stout earth caste, normal human physic for water). Being that the air caste spends most of its time in space and fire warriors could spend a great deal in space being transported to combat zones and guarding ships and space installations. Earth castes are probably about the same life spans as humans of nowadays as well as ethereals and water caste as they spend most of their time planet side building and administering. just a thought

If they are space suits sounds awefully close to UC gundam type stuff
I am still content that the tau was created by the last of the old ones to combat the crons... | | Back to top
