Good People!!! I bring you an interesting question that begs your intelligence and knowledge of Tau!!!

"Why can it be said that the Ethereals served as a Deus Ex Machina?"

Keeping in mind that they're obviously not angels.

SNOOGANS!!

This is really nice, i never thought about them actually being 'gods from a machine' but if you look at how they where used in stories from the ancient greek times, they are very much the same. They appear out of nowhere, in a hopeless situation and resolve that situation. It's indeed not necesarry to call them angels, we do not know if there is any godlike diety behind the appearance of the ethereals.

I also think this is where people get into problems with what they like, for the ethereals are an external solution for the problem of the mont'au and not an internal solution. So they are in most cases very hostile towards things like pheromone control or psychic abilities, for they all could show that the ethereals are not from amongst the Tau.

One caste for the protection of our race,
for their skills and strategies will defend us all.

One caste for the construction of a safe place,
for without their technology our empire would fall.

One caste for our faraway travels,
for their ships will bring us through the galaxy.

One caste for the talking at all levels,
for their smooth words will pave our road to victory.

In our galaxy there will only be the Tau’va.
One caste to rule them all, one caste to guid them,
one caste to bring them all, and in the era of the Mont’au, bind them.
In our galaxy there will only be the Tau’va.

I concur. 10 points to whoever can guess why.

What would be interesting is a story by GW about an ethereal getting captured, and its DNA (or whatever Tau have), being compared to a normal Tau. Then we discover that they are in fact a seperate species. Actually, I wonder if the different castes are different species. They haven't bred with each other for a few thousand years, and I wonder if that is long enough to not be able to interbreed anymore. Hmm...

Cheers!

In a literary sense, and as far as the fluff goes, the ethereals are certainly a Deus ex Machina for the reasons already given.

What exactly they are we can only speculate. I don't suppose GW will tell us any time soon (besides mysteries are cool!).

My memory of the fluff is that all five Tau castes are sub-species of the same race.

I think that all the different castes are one race,
but have evolved different,
because:

They lived in different places when the Tau almost died (about when the ethereals came)

So they are very different from echother.

Ooohh!!! I can't keep it bottled up much longer...

but all I will say (for now) is that the Ethereals are MUCH MUCH more than what we expected.

Just ask the Eldar.

SNOOGANS!!

P.S. I have a good reason for not blogging anythiing in my blog recently... I've been painting my Armoured company for the past week for a tournament that is on today. Everyday I have been waking up at 5:00 am, paint for 2 1/2 hours, go to school, come home at 4:15 and paint from then till 10:30.

Today I woke at 2:30... after going to sleep at 12:30...

Because they were a solution not bred from or relating to the warp? They were removed from that repository of emotion?
